There was a dead heat for second place in sports talk radio ratings in June.

KESN 103.3. FM and 105.3 FM The Fan averaged 3.0 shares in the demographic that matters above all others – men 25-54.

SportsRadio 1310 AM and 96.7 FM The Ticket, as custom, remained the leader of the bunched-up pack at 4.5.

Down deeper in the numbers – in men 25-54 when the high-profile local talent works weekdays from 6 a.m. to 7 p.m. – the score was: Ticket 6.1; Fan 4.7; KESN 3.0.

While the Ticket won each of the 13 hours in the weekday window, The Fan finished second in nine, leaving KESN in second for two hours of Mike & Mike in the morning drive and two hours of The Afternoon Show in the commute home.

WFAN host Craig Carton is hitting the road with FanDuel, but Carton won’t be promoting parlays or special offers to new customers.

Carton will be hitting college campuses across the northeast for their “Responsible Gaming College Tour” in an effort to shine a light and raise awareness towards problem gambling.

“Whether it’s connecting with young adults about my story on campus or promoting safer play among sports fans on social media, I look forward to continuing to promote a culture of responsible gaming with FanDuel,” Carton said in a statement.

Craig Carton ended up in prison for his role in a scheme to defraud investors in order to pay off gambling debts. He was sentenced to more than three years in prison but was released on good behavior in 2020, after just over a year behind bars.

With March being Problem Gambling Awareness Month, Carton’s college tour is just a portion of FanDuel’s overall initiative to do their part.

Carton will be joined by FanDuel responsible gaming ambassador and former boxing champion Amanda Serrano to help promote content on social media that emphasizes the importance of playing within limits and encouraging bettors to use FanDuel’s “Play Well” tools.

Dan Patrick: I See Cam Newton As a Studio Analyst More Than a Quarterback

“He looks good on camera – charismatic – and who knows what he would wear on camera.”

Former Carolina Panthers & New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton took part in Auburn University’s football pro day this week, throwing passes to draft hopefuls looking to impress NFL scouts.

Newton also apparently is trying to revive his career with the pro day appearance.

On The Dan Patrick Show on Tuesday, Patrick and his crew debated whether Cam Newton would make a better starting quarterback, backup quarterback or TV analyst.

Patrick said Newton could have a lucrative career as an analyst.

“He looks good on camera – charismatic – and who knows what he would wear on camera,” Patrick said. “But I can see him as a studio analyst. I can see that.”

One question posed from the Danettes is would Newton be willing to accept a backup quarterback role knowing full well he doesn’t have the talent to be a starter. Patrick said Cam would be better off going into TV.

“He could be an analyst and make more money. He could be, and I don’t know if he wants to do it. I don’t know if he cares about that,” Patrick said. “But he could still be relevant and have a resurgence in his career.”

Regardless of whatever the role is, Patrick said having Cam Newton back in the NFL would be a great thing.

“It’d be fun to have him in the conversation again,” Patrick said. “I just don’t think he’s a starting quarterback.”

Toucher & Rich Mock Dan Shaughnessy Column Expressing Concern Over Gambling Ads

“He’s sick of the commercials for sports gambling and Rich and I are talking about it off the air like ‘What do you want? More Burger King commercials?’”.

Sports betting has taken off like a rocket in the state of Massachusetts. Not only are bets being placed at a record pace, but advertising for the newly legal mobile books is everywhere. That annoys Dan Shaughnessy, and his frustration is to the delight of Toucher & Rich.

“Shaughnessy’s got a pretty funny article,” Fred Toucher said Tuesday morning on 98.5 The Sports Hub in Boston. “He’s sick of the commercials for sports gambling and Rich and I are talking about it off the air like ‘What do you want? More Burger King commercials?’”.

“It’s not like if they took all that off, we’d get to see more of the game,” Rich Shertenlieb added.

In a column published on Tuesday, Shaughnessy wrote that the state could use a break from the relentless television advertising, which he says makes gambling look like a carefree, fun endeavor.

Shertenlieb began to riff on what commercials showing the bad side of gambling could look like and how it may lead to commercials for other industries showing the worst possible outcome of using their products.

“Every fast food commercial shows somebody puking in a toilet and then Brendan Frasier from The Whale,” he said.

He also noted that Shaughnessy turned to some fairly out-of-touch experts for their opinion on the matter. One of them was Faye Vincent, the octogenarian former commissioner of Major League Baseball, who complained about legalized gambling leading to fixing games.

Toucher and Rich mocked how out of touch with the realities of sports gambling in 2023 all of the concerns expressed in the column are. Fred Toucher joked that every complaint and concern in the piece was said while old men were shouting at clouds.

“He’s sick of the commercial and the commercials make it seem like the product’s fun,” he said of Shaughnessy’s complaint. “As opposed to every other commercial? That’s why they did the Schlitz Gay commercial on SNL with Sandler and Farley. I mean, Spuds McKenzie was always with chicks.”
