Former WDAE Host Ian Beckles Welcomes New Challenge

Like a tightrope walker, Ian Beckles always balances his life between various pursuits and interests: sports, fitness, fashion, food, music, business and his foundation.

People have never been able to define him solely as a former Bucs offensive lineman and sports nut. But now, Beckles will perform his balancing act without the financial safety net of his sports talk job at WDAE-AM 620.

Beckles, 48, walked away from his WDAE role last month after 14 years with the station, 12 spent as co-host of the midday show with Ron Diaz.

“It got to a point where I needed a change,” Beckles said. “I’m not going to lie, money had something to do with it, but I think I’m just ready to start a new chapter.”

Beckles says you will see the beginning of his new chapter this month when he launches a webcast with the help of Tampa Bay Multimedia called “Flavor of Tampa Bay.” The title will sound familiar to those who have listened to Beckles’ weekend show that featured various area restaurants, but he assures this product will go beyond food.

“It’s going to expose people to all the happening things in Tampa Bay whether its art or fashion or jewelry or venues or music,” Beckles said. “I want to focus on local. I want some of the smaller companies that need some help.”

Beckles expects this new venture to get a boost from the sponsors of his old radio show, but he’s quick to note the deals he’s held with companies such as the Seminole Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Jaguar of Tampa and the Gold and Diamond Source are more than just sponsors.

“These are relationships,” Beckles said. “These are people who have been to my house, met my family and eaten my food.

“I’m just trying to create a community of like-minded people who are doing some good things.”

Fred Roggin: Boston is Not a Better Sports Radio Market than Los Angeles

“…that does not mean Boston is a better sports radio market than L.A. That’s insane.”

On Friday, Bill Shaikin of the Los Angeles Times authored a piece about the difference in the Boston sports radio market and the L.A. one asserting that “no one listens to sports talk radio in L.A.”

That story and the methodology behind it fired up AM 570’s Fred Roggin of Roggin and Rodney in Los Angeles.

“The story is flawed.”

Roggin said that story is painting Los Angeles listeners as lackluster fans that could care less about sports.

“You don’t care,” Roggin said. “You can take it or leave it. You’re fair weather. You’re not invested. In Boston, it’s part of their life. Here, you don’t care.”

Roggin fired back, “People here desperately care.” He then cited the two Los Angeles area baseball teams that are in the top ten in attendance including the Dodgers who lead the league.

The story is “flawed” as Roggin put it because the author doesn’t factor in obvious differences in the coasts.

“In Los Angeles we have good weather,” said Roggin. “In Los Angeles we have hundreds of restaurants. In Boston they have bad weather. They have to go inside… In the east, you have nothing to do. We have hundreds of things to do.”

Roggin then spoke to the listeners again saying, “that does not mean Boston is a better sports radio market than L.A. That’s insane. And you should be offended by it. I’m offended by it.”

“I counted over 31 radio stations in Boston. There are over 100 in L.A. There’s more options. If you’re listening to sports talk radio, you’re invested… in Boston you are rooting for the Celtics or your mad at them. Here we have 35 teams.”

Roggin then said it’s even harder to be a notable sports figure because in Los Angeles, it’s completely results based. “Here, you have to win to be relevant. In a city of stars, you have to win and succeed to be relevant. You have to win every year. That’s how it is in the big time.”

Sports with Coleman host Jerry Coleman has announced he’s been dropped from 105.7 The Fan in Baltimore due to a cost cutting measure.

Coleman, who hosted the 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM shift, had been on the Baltimore sports scene for more than 20 years. He had previously served as the Fan’s on-field reporter for the Orioles and Ravens.

Coleman says the move happened as a previously planned vacation was about to begin.
