The National League MVP and Cy Young voting were both nearly unanimous, with both Christian Yelich of the Milwaukee Brewers and the New York Mets’ Jacob deGrom each garnering 29 out of 30 votes. John Maffei of the San Diego Union-Tribune, who voted for Max Scherzer to win his third straight Cy Young award, joined WFAN radio host Steve Somers to offer his reasoning.
“John, can you look at yourself in the mirror. … John?” began Somers when introducing the San Diego sports writer to his late-night radio show.
“Can I?” Maffei said. “Absolutely.”
“No, no, no, no, you’re looking for 15 minutes of fame and attention,” Somers quickly responded.
“Steve, this interview is over. Thank you, goodbye,” Maffei replied and quickly ended the call
“What?!” was all a befuddled Somers could say.
The 15 seconds with Somers might have given Maffei more publicity than his lone Cy Young vote for Scherzer. The San Diego sports writer had to know he was going to have to defend his vote on New York sports radio, but a not so warm welcome by Somers created a situation where the conversation ended before it even began.
In an interesting turn of events, Christian Yelich won the National League MVP by receiving 29 out of 30 first place votes. The player that received the lone non-Yelich vote was Jacob deGrom. Nick Piecoro of the Arizona Republic was the baseball writer that gave his vote to deGrom. Stay tuned to see if Piecoro joins a Milwaukee radio show to be chastised, or possibly Steve Somers’ program to be lauded.
