Spotify has been on a run of buying companies to bolster its podcast lineup. Late last year the company acquired Gimlet Media and Parcast. A deal is far from done, but the Wall Street Journal reports that Spotify is in the early stages of making The Ringer its next purchase.
Bill Simmons’s sports and pop culture site is home to 30 podcasts, which in 2018 hit some serious benchmarks according to The Wall Street Journal. The paper reported that The Ringer’s podcasts generated 100 million downloads and likely $15 million in ad revenue.
Simmons’s asking price is $200 million according to Michael McCarthy of Front Office Sports. One source McCarthy spoke with estimated The Ringer’s valuation is somewhere closer to $90 million.
Spotify and The Ringer are no strangers. Simmons’s site already produces The Ringer’s Hottest Take exclusively for the audio streaming platform. If Spotify were to acquire The Ringer, it would likely become the exclusive home for The Ringer’s podcasts, including the mega popular The Bill Simmons Podcast.
The Hollywood Reporter reached out to both companies for comment on the report. Spotify declined. Representitives for Simmons and The Ringer did not return the call.
McCarthy spoke with Eric Jackson of EMJ Capital for his story on the potential deal. Jackson speculated that off-loading The Ringer could be a first step towards Simmons returning to ESPN. Simmons co-created 30 for 30 for ESPN. The network later developed a podcast series based on the beloved documentary brand.
In September, Spotify reported that its podcast audience had grown by 39%. The company also said that the number of users that paid for a Spotify as opposed to using the free service was “almost too good to be true.”

Celebrities involved in the campaign include Drake, Kevin Durant, Mike Krzyzewski, Nyjah Huston, Naomi Osaka, and more.
A new addition to V Week is is the development of #VStrongBaby to show support for ESPN college basketball analyst Dick Vitale, who returned to call his first game of the men’s college basketball season last Tuesday after being diagnosed with lymphoma in October. The hashtag is accompanied by a customized heart emoji in honor of the legendary commentator, which ESPN will feature throughout V Week.
ESPN also continues on in funding the Stuart Scott Memorial Cancer Research Fund, which continues to address health inequities that exist in cancer.
“The ongoing pandemic has continued to disrupt the critical need to fundraise for cancer research and address the health disparities impacting people of color in their fight against cancer,” said Kevin Martinez, vice president of ESPN Corporate Citizenship. “Raising funds for cancer research is a long-standing tradition at ESPN, and we are committed to continuing our work to close the gap in cancer disparities experienced by patients of minority populations and improve their outcomes.”
Along with these traditions, the Jimmy V Men’s and Women’s classics take place next week. The Men’s Classics begin Tuesday, December 7, followed by the Women’s Classics on Sunday, December 12, all airing live on ESPN.
