Rich Eisen returns to the NFL Draft this season after a year away. He will again anchor the NFL Network’s coverage of the event in Cleveland.
2021 will be an interesting draft for a number of reasons. First, it represents the return to an in-person event. Covid-19 turned into into a series of Zoom calls in 2020. Also, this particular draft could see as many as five quarterbacks taken in round one. Eisen says that will likely bring a number of viewers that may not watch the event otherwise.
“If we all know that pick is going to be a defensive tackle or an offensive tackle, to be honest, it’s not going to be that great of a level of interest,” he told Richard Deitsch. “Then it’s your job as a broadcaster to keep people tuned in once the quarterbacks go off the board.”
It seems like a virtual certainty that the first two picks will both the be quarterbacks. Rich Eisen is pretty sure the third pick will be a quarterback too, but it would be a first if all of the first four picks are quarterbacks. Frankly, it is history Eisen hopes to see on Thursday night.
“It would be tremendous. We’ve never seen four in a row, so you have a chance to see something unprecedented. Then the conversation is which one of those franchises just had their generationally-talented, franchise-altering pick and which by the odds of the football gods did not. That’s for down the road. If one goes after the other and after the other, it’ll just be an evaluation for 40 straight minutes. Then comes the aftermath, and by that I mean all the other supremely talented players that would ordinarily have gone somewhere between picks 1 and 4 and getting pushed down. That might mean trades are going to be made to get somebody equally generationally talented like (Florida tight end) Kyle Pitts or (LSU wide receiver) Ja’Marr Chase. Then what happens after that? What about the two Alabama wideouts? When will the fifth quarterback be taken? What happens when the Cowboys are on the clock? It’s tremendous. I’m very excited. It goes very fast.”
The NFL Draft is a unique event. Rich Eisen says he is honored to have hosted the NFL Network’s coverage for so long. He told Deitsch that he is always excited to be part of an event built around young athletes seeing their hard work pay off.
“I love all of that. It’s a very unique role in sports television that I do not take for granted and I will never be jaded about.”
