Adnan Virk is tapping out at WWE. Virk and the company agreed to mutually part ways after joining the network seven weeks ago to be the new voice of Monday Night RAW.
There are only 24 hours in a day, and that fact was the big issue for Virk in his pursuit of a dream gig.
“Thanks to @WWE for a wonderful opportunity,” Virk said on Twitter. “The weekly travel along with my other jobs was a grind for me and my family. Am grateful to everyone with the company especially @WWEGraves and @ByronSaxton for being such fantastic teammates.”
Virk’s role with WWE made him one of the busiest voices in sports media, wearing hosting hats for DAZN, MLB Network, and two podcasts: “Cinephile with Adnan Virk” and “The GM Shuffle.” All of it was too much to handle when factoring in travel.
Virk was a part of WWE’s move towards more prominent sports voices on their broadcast. He and Pat McAfee brought that gravitas over the past couple of months, but wrestling fans could tell Virk wasn’t ready. He stumbled over phrases and never quite got the wrestling lingo down to satisfy the fan base. In fairness, Virk had never done wrestling play-by-play before and was doing his best to improve. He talked about his performance last month on the SI Media Podcast.
“I get home and I talked to my wife and she goes ‘how did it go?’ I said ‘you know, I thought I did all right. I made some mistakes. There’s certainly some stuff I’d like to get back but Corey (Graves) and Byron (Saxton) were great. I think I’ll get better. I thought this was good.’ I’ll only really get better by watching it. So then I rewatched the whole show, I watched start to finish — I haven’t yet for the second one, but I will — and said ‘okay, that was better than I thought, that was worse than I thought.’ I think whenever you make a mistake — again, you’d like to make zero mistakes, you want to bat 1.000 — but if you make a mistake don’t make the same mistake twice, just learn from it.”
WWE has not announced Virk’s replacement on Monday Night RAW as the promotion gets ready for their first multi-city tour since the pandemic began.
