Cable News More Biased Than 10 Years Ago, Study Says

The study found that CNN moved further left of MSNBC after the 2016 presidential election, with shows like Anderson Cooper 360 and CNN Tonight moving left of The Rachel Maddow Show.

A recent study from the University of Pennsylvania has revealed something many could deduce on their own: cable news is more biased today than it was in 2012.

In the study entitled Measuring Dynamic Media Bias, Fox News, CNN, and MSNBC were rated on a bias scale that utilized their guests as the unit of measurement. The study’s researchers combed through each network’s guests who appeared on a channel for more than 10 hours from 2010 through August of 2020.

The study found that CNN moved further left of MSNBC after the 2016 presidential election, with shows like Anderson Cooper 360 and CNN Tonight moving left of The Rachel Maddow Show.

“While Fox News is always to the right of CNN and MSNBC, CNN and MSNBC become more in sync over time. Between 2011 and 2015, CNN was consistently to the right of MSNBC, which is no longer the case after 2015,” the study finds.

Also, the study found more bias comes from prime-time shows like Tucker Carlson Tonight and Maddow’s.

A former ABC News producer who has accused Chris Cuomo of groping her in 2005 has sounded off following the announcement that the former CNN host will be hosting a primetime show on NewsNation starting this fall.

Shelley Ross posted a message on Facebook, which the New York Post relayed, attacking NewsNation for their decision to bring Cuomo. Furthermore, Ross also called out host and Mediaite founder Dan Abrams, who had a lengthy interview with Cuomo.

“Dan, I’m a decades-long fan of yours,” Ross wrote. “But you’ve got this one wrong. The (modest) mixed reaction to Cuomo’s new job does not prove the status quo of the media is under threat.”

“Cuomo IS the status quo, same old same old arrogant, misogynistic proud member of the old boy’s club.”

Ross includes that she is rooting to see NewsNation succeed, considering the cable news scene needs new voices, but then condemns the company for bringing in someone like Cuomo.

“No one cares what News Nation [sic] ratings are. I am rooting for something new, fresh and honest,” Ross wrote. “Just maybe some of us don’t see Cuomo as that answer… those who have been disappointed in his lack of genuine contrition.”

“As he continues to parse his words, hide behind the love of a brother, deny wrongdoing, he remains tone-deaf and phony to many of us.”

CNN has yet to fill the 9 PM time slot that became vacant when the network opted to dismiss former host Chris Cuomo.

Nonetheless, Axios reports that CEO Chris Licht is considering having a show led by multiple anchors to fill that hour. It’s one of a few options Licht is looking at ahead of the show’s relaunch this fall.

Also, the 9 PM hour ratings have declined since Cuomo exited from the network late last year.

CNN has tested various anchors since the departure of Cuomo. Laura Coates, a senior legal analyst at the network, has taken the position continually in recent weeks.

However, hosts such as Michael Smerconish and Brianna Keilar have also guest-hosted in the time slot for the company. In the past few months, the 9 PM hour often has featured panels of three to four guests discussing the day’s news.

While CNN looks for a replacement, Cuomo has already found his next gig as the host is heading to NewsNation this fall to host a primetime show for the network.
