Sports Business Journal has announced their awards for the year, and as expected the Manningcast alternate feed for ESPN’s Monday Night Football has received some high praise.
The Manningcast was named “the best innovation” for the year. The alternate broadcast concept has been done before by ESPN, but the Mannings have taken it to the next level.
“What was clear to all of us was that flexibility was important,” ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro told the Marchand and Ourand Sports Media Podcast in October. “I think Peyton said that, Eli said that, that flexibility in terms of his family was his top priority, and what I communicated back to Peyton is that we’re willing to be creative here.”
Flexibility is the keyword when it comes to the Manningcast. Both Peyton and Eli can go from having attention to detail and being analytical about the game, and quickly shift to comedic and light-hearted, a welcome sight for viewers at home.
Eli Manning believes what makes the telecast so good is that it feels special, it doesn’t take place every Monday night which allows the content to not get stale.
“We signed a contract to do 10 games a year for three years, and no one’s talked about changing that,” he said. “You’ve got a few bye weeks to get a break, get a breather, which is helpful.” said Manning.
The product has received plenty of interest from potential suitors once their contract with ESPN runs up in 2023.
It is also possible that we won’t see any more Manningcast in the future, as Peyton has expressed interest in joining an ownership group for the Denver Broncos in the near future.
