All Access is reporting that Nielsen has alerted its clients of potential difficulties due to the COVID-19 surge. The measurement company which works with the majority of the radio broadcasting business has also relayed details of how it plans to handle the situation in order to deliver accurate and consistent audience estimates.
In the letter, Nielsen says it will continue executing in-person field work while using its established multi-mode recruitment and remote installation and maintenance procedures. However, the company cautioned that some delays in recruitment and slight volatility in intab levels could occur over the next month.
Nielsen further shared that it expected to have intab levels stabilized and back to current levels by the end of February or early March, depending on Omicron recovery rates. In-tab levels are expected to be closely monitored and field resources will be evaluated and adjusted if necessary.
Being able to rely on accurate radio measurement is important to radio stations and their advertisers. Though Nielsen says it is actively monitoring COVID infection rates in key panel markets, and any possible impact to its PPM inventory due to global supply chain challenges, the admission of potential challenges in executing as expected is likely to give radio executives and sales professionals a few extra headaches. The company says that it is confident that its contingency plans will mitigate risk, allowing it to move swiftly to ensure the accuracy and representativeness of its audience estimates. Whether that holds true or not will be depend on a myriad of factors over the next month.
Two New Radio Stations Will Carry Vox’s “Today Explained”

Vox Media’s flagship daily news podcast “Today Explained” made its radio debut last month after a distribution agreement with WNYC Studios. The show is expanding, reaching other stations, including one in a marquee market.
The company announced that “Today Explained” will now be adding two new stations to the roster, KCRW (Los Angeles) and WEKU (Eastern Kentucky).
“The KCRW audience is curious, connected, and drawn to the most interesting stories – not just the most immediate,” Evan George, content director of news for KCRW, said.
“Today Explained fits our approach to newsy storytelling with heart. We’re also excited for KCRW listeners to hear some public media voices from around the country help tell the big story of the day without being limited to a four-minute segment.”
Los Angeles is the second-largest public radio market in the U.S., and for co-host Sean Rameswaram, an L.A. native, it’s a homecoming of sorts. Furthermore, the show frequently covers the state of California, whether it’s from politicians to policies pushed.

NPR Appoints Sal LoCurto as Senior Director for Program Strategy
LoCurto has spent the past five years heading KPCC’s programming.
NPR has found its newest Senior Director For Broadcast Programming Strategy as the company has hired 89.3 KPCC Pasadena/Los Angeles Program Director Sal LoCurto.
LoCurto has spent the past five years heading KPCC’s programming. In his new position, he will supervise the strategic focus of NPR’s non-newsmagazine broadcast programming and manage relationships with outer program producers.
“Among the valuable skills and experience Sal brings to NPR are a deep knowledge of broadcast best practices and the needs of our member stations,” the statement said relayed by Radio Insight.
“Under his leadership, KPCC experienced its highest-rated nine months in the station’s history. Sal also managed and coached key on-air talent, including A Martinez – who has since joined NPR – during his tenure at the station.”
The soon-to-be-former program director will join NPR on June 6th and is more than excited at the chance to work for the public radio station.
“This is a fantastic opportunity to work with our exceptional programming colleagues around the country and NPR’s production partners as we seek new ways to best serve audiences and fulfill our shared mission. I’m truly honored to join NPR’s team,” LoCurto said.
WGN Radio Launches Documentary to Celebrate its 100th Anniversary
The 45-minute documentary produced by WGN Radio tells how the station launched 100 years ago on Thursday.
WGN Radio is ready to kick off the celebrations for the radio station’s 100th anniversary as it will debut a feature, “100 Years of WGN Radio: A Retrospective,” Thursday, May 19 at 7 pm on WGN-TV.
The 45-minute documentary produced by WGN Radio tells how the station launched 100 years ago on Thursday. The story started in 1922 when Chicagoans Thorne Donnelley and Elliott Jenkins founded it as WDAP and highlighted moments throughout its century of history up to the present day.
“Celebrate WGN Radio’s 100th anniversary with a deep dive into the station’s origins and its journey to 2022. Experience the unforgettable events and emotional moments alongside familiar faces, both past, and present,” WGN said.
Viewers will see the faces of familiar voices during the documentary, such as Bob Sirott, John Williams, Lou Manfredini, Steve King, Johnnie Putman, Dave Eanet, Mary Van De Velde, Dave Plier, and others.
They will all be reflecting on their ventures at the station and sharing memorable moments. Furthermore, there will be a rebroadcast of the documentary for those who miss the initial airing on Sunday, May 22, at 2 pm CT.
