Fox Sports host Nick Wright learned the news of the Tyreek Hill trade in real-time (via The Big Lead), reacting while cameras were rolling on recording his podcast What’s Wright? with Nick Wright.
After reports surfaced that the Kansas City Chiefs would not sign the star receiver to a contract extension, the story morphed into which team would be willing to trade for Hill. Wright had to check in with ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter to verify the situation.
“Is Schefter gonna tell me this is not true?” Wright asked.
Eventually he learned that the New York Jets and Miami Dolphins emerged as favorites to land Hill. Still, Wright, who is a noted die-hard Chiefs fan, was trying to wrap his head around what was happening.
“I’m not going to sit here and pretend this is good,” he said. “This is obviously not good. HOWEVER, this is my version of tweeting through it, Tyreek is one of the most unique, special and talented receivers ever. He’s on a Hall of Fame trajectory. I’m not going to deny that.”
Wright then thought about where this leaves the Chiefs and took a broader view of the AFC West, where the Denver Broncos and Las Vegas Raiders are lacking early-round picks after making moves of their own to acquire Russell Wilson and Davonte Adams, respectively.
“While all those teams are focused on the here and now, Chiefs have a long, 100-yard view of this thing, setting up a dynastic run,” he said.
Eventually, social media caught up and people jokingly asked to check on Wright, which started trending on Twitter.
“All these strangers pretending to care about my well-being when they’re just mocking me,” he said. “It’s hundreds in the last 30 minutes! This is stupid.”
Hill was indeed dealt to the Dolphins for first, second and fourth-round picks in next month’s NFL Draft, plus fourth and sixth-round selections in 2023. And after some time to absorb the news, Wright seemed OK.
